The giant anteater is an insectivorous mammal native to Central and South America. It is one of four living species of anteaters, of which it is the largest member. The only extant member of the genus Myrmecophaga, it is classified with sloths in the order Pilosa. This species is mostly terrestrial, in contrast to other living anteaters and sloths, which are arboreal or semiarboreal. The giant anteater is 182 to 217 cm in length, with weights of 33 to 50 kg for males and 27 to 47 kg for females. It is recognizable by its elongated snout, bushy tail, long fore claws, and distinctively colored pelage.

विशाल चींटीखोर, जिसे चींटी भालू भी जाना जाता हैं, एक विशाल कीटभक्षी स्तनधारी हैं, जो मध्य और दक्षिण अमेरिका का मूल निवासी हैं। यह चींटीखोरों की चार जीवित प्रजातियों में से एक है और पिलोसा प्रकार में स्लोथ के साथ वर्गीकृत किया गया हैं। अन्य जीवित चींटीखोरों और स्लोथ के विपरीत जो वानस्पतिक या अर्ध-वानस्पतिक होते हैं, यह प्रजाति ज्यादातर स्थलीय हैं। अपने परिवार का सबसे बड़ा सदस्य, विशाल चींटीखोर की लम्बाई 182–217 सेन्टीमीटर (5.97–7.12 फीट) तथा नर और मादा का वज़न क्रमशः 33–41 किलोग्राम (73–90 पौंड) और 27–39 किलोग्राम (60–86 पौंड) होता हैं। यह अपनी लम्बी थूथन, जंगली पूँछ, लंबे सामने के पंजे, और विशिष्ट रंग के ऊर्णाजिन से पहचानने योग्य हैं।
